Real-World TempraMed VIVI Cap Review — Is It Worth It?
The VIVI Cap: Another Tool My Type 1 Diabetes Travel Toolbox
Travel with type 1 diabetes adds a layer of decision-making that most travelers never have to think about. Keeping my insulin at a safe temperature is one of the biggest variables, especially when going between climates or spending long days outdoors in different conditions.
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as an adult shortly after choosing to be a remote worker—working while I travel to learn about the world. So I had to learn quickly what tools worked for different situations for keeping my insulin cool or at safe temperatures. I mean…after I had 2 insulin pens freeze while on my first international flight after diagnosis that is…
If you’re anything like me, I’m guessing your arsenal of type 1 gadgets continues to grow, since very few tools for our type 1 lives work for every situation!
Information & stories on this site is based on my own research and personal experiences managing type 1 diabetes. Everyone’s type 1 diabetes journey is unique—Always talk with your doctor before making any medical care decisions.

Related Nerdiness: Can You Freeze Insulin? Technically Yes, But…
Since getting my hands on my TempraMed VIVI Cap it’s ridden shotgun on all of my domestic and international travel, and any daily adventure where I need backup insulin. For me, I’m on an insulin pump (here’s why I recommend one…if you can afford it), but I use insulin pens as backup especially on day trips or hiking trips.
Like I’ve always said, your backup plans should have backup plans…especially if you’re traveling with type 1 internationally.
In this VIVI Cap review, I’ll break down what it does, why it works, and how it can fit into your daily or travel routine.
How I’ve Used My VIVI Cap
I’ve used the VIVI Cap on dozens of trips and adventures since getting it. As of this writing I’m coming off full days hiking and exploring the Pisac Ruins and Rainbow Mountain in Peru. (Click those links if you want to check out those amazing days!)

And I’m currently writing this while sweating it out in Vietnam, where it’s steadily in the mid-80s.
Keep in mind that it’s usually recommended to keep insulin below 86°F (30°C) for opened pens and vials!
I have my VIVI cap on me with a backup insulin pen/cartridge for most one- to three-day trips as a backup solution for my insulin pen in case my pump breaks or malfunctions, but it’s always packed nomatter where in the world I am.
My other insulin coolers are much larger and serve a different purpose. My VIVI Cap is a small option to keep my Novo Echo Pen ready in case I need to use it, or if I just need to use the insulin in the pen cartridge to fill or refill my insulin pump cartridge.

You can quickly check current VIVI Cap prices, discounts and bundles on their site here. And can check prices on Amazon, but they’re usually more expensive there!
Because people with type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes rely on different types of insulin pens, and because heat exposure is always a concern, The VIVI Cap fills a really specific gap. And it’s kind of like magic since it doesn’t need charging or batteries, etc… but we’ll get into that later.

How The VIVI Cap Works
This is a little nerdy…using some words from TempraMed’s website, but it’s also pretty cool! (Get it…cool?) Inside the VIVI Cap insulin pen case “…uses a unique patented combination of special insulation with “self-regenerating” heat absorbing material and control electronics…” helping keep the insulin at the correct temperature ranges when outside temperatures get warm.
Note though, that it specifically isn’t a refrigerated unit and doesn’t have frozen gel or the like, so it won’t cool insulin to refrigerated temperatures, but it does provide a protective buffer that prevents overheating.
Using The VIVI Cap Is Honestly Magically Simple
- Remove your insulin pen’s original cap
- Insert the insulin cartridge end into the VIVI Cap cooling end
- Check the indicator as needed in warm conditions
There’s no soaking or freezing required, and no setup the night before a trip. It works passively in the background, which is ideal for kind of setting it and forgetting it and knowing your insulin will stay cool. Just press the button to light up the LED, and if it’s green you know it’s working.
It’s also compatible with several types of insulin pens, as long as you purchase the version designed for your specific model.

VIVI CAP Insulin Pen Compatibility
Because there are many types of insulin pens available, TempraMed figured out how to make this insulin pen cooler work with pretty much all of them.
Per TempraMed’s website, as of this writing: “Works with ANY insulin pen and interchangable between pens.”
Here’s what seems like a growing list of compatible pens…
Types Of Insulin Pens VIVI Cap Works With: Pre-Filled Insulin Pens
- Novo Nordisk: NovoLog, NovoRapid, Levemir, Victoza, Tresiba, Fiasp, Saxenda, Ryzodeg, Xultophy, Ozempic (KwikPen)
- Eli Lilly: Humalog, Humalog Mix, Humulin, Lyumjev, Basaglar, Insulin Lispro
- Sanofi: Apidra, Lantus, Admelog, Soliqua
Types Of Insulin Pens VIVI Cap Works With: Refillable Insulin Pens
- Novo Nordisk: NovoPen 4, 5, Echo
- Eli Lilly: Luxura, Luxura HD, Ergo II, Savvio
- Sanofi: ClickSTAR, Autopen

Real-World Travel Use
In practice, the TempraMed VIVI Cap has done exactly what I needed it to do—make it so that I didn’t have to think about my backup insulin pen/cartridge. The device handles the heat while I focus on the adventures.
I do still use my larger insulin coolers for long flights and when I’m going from destination to destination, since I typically travel with months worth of insulin that need to stay at refrigerated temps when traveling internationally, until I need them.

Comparing Insulin Coolers
Different insulin pen travel cases serve different purposes. Some are built for long-term cooling while others have space and can cool multiple insulin pens or vails of insulin simultaneously. The VIVI Cap isn’t meant to replace those options—it fills a different place in your arsenal.
TempraMed VIVI Cap:
- No preparation required
- Ultra-lightweight and compact
- Good for daily, short-term protection
- Compatible with multiple types of insulin pens
Other More Robust Insulin Coolers:
- Good for Extreme heat for extended periods
- Good for carrying several pens or vials at once
- Good for Travel where refrigeration is regularly needed (I’ve used this one for over 4 years now)
The VIVI Cap is for simple everyday use protecting a single insulin pen from high temperatures, rather than long-term cooling for multiple pens or vails of insulin.
Cost: Is The VIVI Cap Worth It?
Honestly, I feel like this disease is nickel and diming us all. But I’ve come to the realization that most of the expensive things I spend on that can remove additional stress over and above all of the daily stress we already have, is worth it. But that’s just me.
You can quickly check current VIVI Cap prices, discounts and bundles on their site here. And can check prices on Amazon, but they’re usually more expensive there!

While the TempraMed VIVI Cap is considerably more expensive than basic cooling sleeves, it serve a very specific purpose and should last a really long time with no maintenance, based on TempraMed’s site.
You’re not replacing ice packs, refills, or accessories, and you’re not spending time preparing the device to work. In theory, you purchase it once, and it becomes part of your insulin toolbox indefinitely.
TempraMed also runs quite a few bundle specials fairly often, so you can save by getting a couple or splitting an order with a friend!
Because replacing insulin can be difficult and expensive, the protection insulin coolers offer is often worth more than the cost of the device itself or even the insulin it might save. They also reduce stress—we have enough of that already.

TempraMed VIVI Cap Review Wrapup
After multiple weeks- and months-on-end of international travel with type 1 diabetes, my TempraMed VIVI Cap continues to be along for every trip, even if only as part of my backup plans.
Rumor has it TempraMed is also working on a version that will keep insulin vails at safe temperatures, so I’m waiting patiently for that!

If you’re considering new insulin pen travel cases, the VIVI Cap offers a simple, single-pen cooling fix that fits into almost any travel style, short- and long-term.
Beyond that, it’s also great for if you’re not a traveler and just spend time in high-heat climates and don’t want to worry about your insulin pen staying at safe temperatures.
It doesn’t replace heavy-duty insulin refrigerators or insulin coolers that can keep multiple items at refrigerated temps for days on end, but for most everyday uses, it does the trick.

FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions About The TempraMed VIVI Cap
How Does The VIVI Cap Actually Protect Insulin?
The VIVI Cap works by using a phase‑change material that absorbs excess heat before it reaches your insulin. This allows the pen to stay within safe temperature ranges without requiring refrigeration or ice packs.
Can The VIVI Cap Replace My Insulin Cooler On Longer Trips?
It can help protect a single pen from heat, but it is not designed to replace full insulin coolers that keep multiple pens or vials at refrigerated temperatures for long periods. The VIVI Cap offers short‑term, passive protection rather than active cooling.
Does The VIVI Cap Work With All Types Of Insulin Pens?
It works with most brands and models, but best to make sure the specific insulin pen you’re using is compatible as new models of the VIVI Cap are released or insulin pen manufacturers change designs.
Does The VIVI Cap Need Batteries Or Charging?
Nope. No power required. The cooling mechanism is passive, meaning the device works automatically when temperatures rise.
You can quickly check current VIVI Cap prices, discounts and bundles on their site here. And can check prices on Amazon, but they’re usually more expensive there!
Can The VIVI Cap Protect Insulin In Extremely Hot Climates?
It offers protection in high heat, but there are limits. In very extreme temperatures or for prolonged exposure, additional insulated layers or a traditional insulin cooler may still be necessary.
How Long Does A VIVI Cap Last?
According to the manufacturer, TempraMed, the internal phase‑change material is designed to last for years without needing replacement.
Is The VIVI Cap Helpful Even If I Don’t Travel A Lot?
Yes. It’s really made for everyday situations—outdoor activities, errands, or warm climates—where keeping a pen at safe temperatures matters even close to home.
